Hi, this is Manton.
Welcome to the timetable podcast.
So I’ve been on a bit of adventure the last week, almost two weeks, and I thought I’d try to capture some of it in a podcast episode.
I am just arriving in Spain on a cruise ship across the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s a repositioning cruise where they have to move the ship.
So it’s one way and I’ll fly back after spending some time in Europe.
I saw this cruise on the schedule a couple of years ago when just randomly browsing and it seemed like an interesting experience.
It’s rare to have a long cruise like this out of Galveston in Texas.
It’s the first I’ve ever seen actually.
Last year was very hard for a couple reasons.
Although I can’t really complain, there’s a lot of things that are going really well too.
But after a tough year, I’m feeling a little more YOLO.
You only live once.
And so this opportunity came along for an extended trip and everything just seemed to line up.
I have been working every day on the ship.
It was eight days at sea since the last port.
And I didn’t really mention any of this or make a big deal about it because I was feeling a little self-conscious about the whole thing.
It’s an experiment in working remotely and I didn’t want to say too much until I knew it was actually going to work.
And it did work.
The internet has been pretty reliable.
The ship uses Starlink satellite and sometimes it’s slow or flaky, but for the most part it just works in the middle of the ocean.
It’s incredible.
So I’ve had no problem with email, server deploys from micro.blog.
I’ve even done a couple of Mac releases of Inkwell, a new app for feed reading.
And that’s been really fun to work on.
My routine is actually not that different from home, except this is just have a lot more free time, just way more free time.
And I get coffee in the morning.
I work for a few hours.
I work some more later in the day.
There are a million fun things to do, of course, on the ship.
And it’s such a long trip that I’m trying to cram everything in.
I’m just going to shows or events here and there.
I’ve only been on a few cruises before, short ones, and this ship is way bigger than anything I’ve been on before.
There are way more shows and bigger shows.
There’s an ice skating rink and a couple of skating shows that have been really amazing.
There has been music, wonderful Adele covers the other night.
And there’s an outside water show with synchronized swimming, acrobatics and whatnot.
There was a U2 deep cut during part of that show.
And it’s just been a really fun experience.
And I feel good about all the work I’ve done, too.
I’ve probably worked way too much, but there’s a lot to do.
Microblog and everything.
And so that’s it for today.
Just a snapshot of my time here.
I’m looking forward to Spain, and I hope everyone is having a good week, too, wherever you are.
Thanks for listening.
Bye.
